I donate a portion of Katavision’s services to non-profit organizations. It will come as no surprise that this pro-bono work is created for Surfrider Foundation, specifically the West LA / Malibu chapter where I serve on the Executive Committee this year.
The latest is a print job, postcards announcing the 2011 beach clean up schedule. The chapter organizes these clean ups once a month, on the first Saturday of the month. The February clean up is on Saturday 2/5 at Venice Pier.
For all its tourism and classic California vibe, Venice Beach is one of the dirtiest beaches you’ll encounter. I surf the Breakwater frequently. One early morning, I walked out to a disemboweled suitcase with all its contents strewn everywhere along the beach. It was clearly the work of thieves who thought the beach was a trash dump. I asked security guards, who were there for the sand replenishment program, to alert the proper folks to get rid of it.
Another time, I dragged in from the water a black tarp big enough to be a floor-length window curtain. It was so heavy that I wondered if there was a body inside. There wasn’t.
I digress. Come to a beach clean up with Surfrider soon. You’ll never know what you’ll find!
Special thanks to Green Earth Print and Design, Plan It Green Printing, and Eco Paper for donating the entire job. The stock from Eco Paper is super: It’s made from bananas!
