It’s near summertime! School is out and that means a bevy of interns are probably knocking at your door looking for real world experience.

I’m lucky to have two excellent interns. Sean Watkins of Otis College of Design and Darrin Pattanumotana, who studied at University of Brighton, have been key in helping me get through some very busy times at the studio recently. Sean worked video editing magic on this interview I did with Jim Cragg of Green Vets LA.

Darrin is a talented illustrator and I immediately saw how her creativity could be leveraged for the Surfrider WLAM business cards. She also rides a mean lowrider BMX.

The business cards got printed this morning, and since Darrin has never been to a press check, I invited her to come on press this morning to see what to look for when an item goes to print.

Internships are a real opportunity to mentor young artists and designers. That’s how I see the relationship: Mentorship. It’s taught me to stick to my game and to demonstrate through my own actions how the business is done, rather than asking for someone to fetch me coffee. You get what you give, remember that when looking for interns!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone got to enjoy the snowy weather along both coasts! I’m excited to announce the launch of the Katavision website, marking the launch of Katavision operations as a full-service design studio. An auspicious double rainbow appeared from the new office … looks like it’s going to be a great 2011! See you soon!
